On Monday, at approximately 6:00 pm Damascus time, Amina Arraf, a Syrian-American blogger who has been covering events in Syria on her blog A Gay Girl in Damascus, was walking with a friend when she was abducted by armed men.

Amina’s current location is unknown and it is unclear if she is in a jail or being held elsewhere in Damascus. Her family are desperately trying to locate her. Her blog has received a great deal of media coverage in recent months and has drawn a wide following from Syria and across the world. Amina has shown a great deal of courage in her outspoken criticism of the regime and its repression and in addressing the situation of gays in Syria.

Syrian authorities have long been cracking down on journalists and bloggers and have arrested many since protests began in mid-March. Human rights groups say that more than 1,200 people have been killed and at least 10,000 have been detained, included women and children, many of whom report ill-treatment and torture at the hands of security services.

We, the undersigned, call upon the Syrian regime to immediately release Amina. We ask that everyone with influence in this situation increase their efforts to ensure that she is freed quickly and unharmed.

We ask all human rights organizations both in Syria and internationally to advocate for her release and for the release of all political prisoners and dissidents in the country.

We call on the British government to end its support for repressive regimes and for the use of torture in the region and beyond. We stand in solidarity with the Syrian people and their demands and are opposed to military intervention of any kind.

As Amina wrote in a blog post on the day before her kidnapping: “We want a free and independent Syria and we reject foreign intervention.” In a recent interview with the Guardian, Amina sounded hopeful: “I have to believe that, sooner or later, we will prevail."

So, firstly, I would like to wish you all HAPPY VALENTINES day! so here goes!

I can not believe that exactly a year ago I was in the air heading back from Oslo, Norway, after winning Mr Gay World. Yep, I spent my last Valentines Day eating 'bird food' and getting used to the fact that I had just won an international competition which was weird as I had never won anything else in my life (other than Mr Gay South Africa of course)!

It has been a crazy year, let me tell you! So much has changed, and continue to change but WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! It has only been an HONOUR to serve the global LGBTI community as I have and if I was able to make a differencein ONE person's life, then I achieved my goal! In a month from now, a new bearer to the crown will be in my shoes to represent an ever changing group of people, and looking at the delegates for this year, it seems like it could be a really good competition this year!

So, as part of the last leg of my journey, (it really feels like i have taken part in a year long Amazing Race Show) I will be heading to the Concrete Jungle where dreams are made, THE BIG APPLE, THE CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS-NEW YORK! I have to say thank you once again to Wilco at Club Travel Honeydew for the awesome flights and accommodation as well as Jarl and his Team in NY. I really can't wait to see you all and see whats happening on your side of the world! Thereafter I'll be heading home for two days and then jet off to the beautiful country of the Philippines for the 2011 Mr Gay World Competition.

I cant believe its been a year already!

A year ago i was crowned Mr Gay World. After a hectic year of travelling, meeting new people and cultures, launching our own HIV campaign and being a spokesperson for the global LGBTI community, the time has finally come to hand over my proverbial crown to my successor, Mr Gay World 2011.

On 13 March 2011, the world will be holding its breath as we announce the new Mr Gay World. Preparations have been done and i have to commend the Manila team for their extraordinary hard work in planning and executing a world wide event!

As the theme says, it will most certainly be an experience of MANILA FLARE! So, if you can be there, GO FOR IT! It will be an experience you will never forget!

So now that everybody has had a good Christmas and New Years (Seasons greetings by the way) I can continue my story of the Philippines trip! I know it might be a bit old news but ill be quick. I somehow cant continue with unfinished business at hand.

To recap, last time I headed for a photo shoot in Philippines which was to be used for promoting the Mr Gay World 2011 Competition to be held in March this year in Manila.

The Next day, the 9^th of December was my birthday, but there was no time for celebration. It was the launch of the Red Ribbon Campaign and with a day filled with Television appearances there was no rest. The day started early and we headed to the TV studios for an appearance on Juicy, one of the best known talk shows. From there we headed to Club Phi where the launch was to be held!

After a very successful launch we headed to another TV station to appear on the Philippines version of The David Letterman show. Once all the formalities were done it was finally time to relax and enjoy some birthday celebrations. I was treated to an incredible cabaret show at Club Mwah which ended in a presentation of a cake after which we danced the night away….well not for too long as the next day was yet another Radio appearance.

On the Sunday (I was to leave for SA later that evening) we made a trip to Villa Escudero, a heritage site just outside of Manila. From there it was one more meeting with Boy Abunda, the ‘Oprah’ of Philippines and then off to the airport!

I woke up on Tuesday morning feeling like a freight train had hit me. Yep, that crazy feeling of Jet-lag where it feels like people talk in slow-mo and you’re walking on a moving platform, yet, it was time to get down to business and do what I came to the Philippines to do. First stop was a radio program called Tambalan at one of the Philippines biggest Media Groups where we did promotion for the 2011 Mr Gay World Competition to be held in Manila in March, as well as promote the launch of our new campaign for the education of HIV/Aids-The Red Ribbon Campain!

(Now, for those of you who are interested, The Red Ribbon Campagin is an initiative by Mr Gay World and Gay World Philippines to create awareness and education within the Philipino community. This was done in honour of one of this year’s contestant from the Philippines who lost his battle with Aids. AS said previously, statistics had show a dramatic increase in the infection rates in the country and so there was only one thing left to do, GET THE WORD OUT THERE and educate the community so as to mobilize them to action, after all, this is their future at stake here.)

This was only the start of my day and by the end of it, I had visited no less that six Radio stations allover the city with my final interview being at 21:30 on a show called Boys Night Out.I can tell you one thing, if it wasn’t for my incredible hosts keeping me fed, and Starbucks, I don’t know how I wiuld have made it! Lol

After all the hustle and bustle we headed to meet Noemi, the MOTHER of the Mr Gay World Philippines for some nice traditional-ish Philipino food, after which it was back to the hotel for some rest as the next day I would be doing a photoshoot with sash and all for the Mr Gay World 2011 competition! (not that I got any sleep, as it was midday back home, so my mind was tired, but my body was on a whole different time schedule!) I had also started to get the feel of the place, with its intense humidity and craziness yet, unlike most busy cities, there seemed to be an incredible politeness and genuine friendliness from the people. Maybe it was because I stood at least a foot taller than most of them and had blonde hair and blue eyes (a rarity in the Philippines). Either way, I felt at home. Even though the next few days were going to be hectic, it was all good....

Walking through the all familiar International Arrivals hall at OR Thambo on Monday afternoon, I think back to a week ago when I left South Africa to travel to the Philippines to launch an initiative by Mr Gay World and its counterpart, Mr Gay World Philippines Called The Red Ribbon Campaign. Like many I thought I’d be able to take a break from all the ‘pageant stuff’, lie on a beach and relax. After all, it was my birthday in just a few days and I was on a tropical island (7101 islands to be exact) so what better way to spend it, right?

After an 18 hour journey I finally arrived in Manila to the warm welcome of Mac, a Producer of Mr Gay world Philippines as well as my dear friend David Bosley, Mr Gay World Philippines 2009, whom I had become close friends with during my time in Oslo at Mr Gay World 2010. I was tired, yet as always when I’m in a new country, excited to see what this journey would bring. The two hour drive from the airport would be my first real taste of life in Manila. A city inhabited by 23million people (Philipino population is approx 90 mil), the Metropolis of Manila is a hustle and bustle of cars, tri-cycles and Jeepnies (their public transport) all thrown into what I could only describe as organized chaos! I thought Jo-burg traffic was bad…lol….yea right! Yet, the people seem to have an understanding, so you just go along with it. Although I must admit I was really glad I did not have to drive!

After checking into my hotel room it was off to dinner with the rest of the production team at a Brazilian restaurant in a complex called Metrowalk, where they have live music every night of the week. Oh btw, for those of you who don’t know, Philipinos are absolutely crazy about music and their celebs, a few of which are now world famous (Charise and also the dude from Black Eyed Pease). Anyway, after dinner I was briefed about my week and all the activities that would take place and starting in the morning would be a visit to all their high profile radio stations to promote the Mr Gay World 2011 Competition in Philippines as well as the launch of our Red Ribbon Campaign, that was to be held on my birthday. It was clear to me that this was not going to be a time of rest, but a time of advocacy for gay rights in the Philipines especially focussing on the matter at hand-that 3 in every 5 homosexual males were being infected with the virus daily in this country, and while the rest of the world was showing a decrease in infection rates, the Philippines showed a dramatic increase!

This week was going to be hectic, so after a few drinks with the crew it was off to my bed at the Holiday Inn Galeria to get some much needed rest for the week ahead!

Hey ya'll!

So, I'm gonna try and get as much info into as little a space as possible...lol....hey we can't all sit on blogs the whole day reading while the boss looks over our shoulders!

So, my last days as Mr Gay South Africa: I can only say it was a pleasure. I had the privilege of spending it on a cruise with the 2010 contestants, only this time around I had a lot more time on my hands and was able to really appreciate the wonders of the ocean...and may I say stable ground...as the last day on the ship was spend walking from hard to starboard, and not because we wanted to, but because of the motion of the ocean. On Friday night a new Representative for the SA Gay Community was chosen and the entire day was like reliving my year in a nutshell while reminiscing about my own experience on the night of the 2009 competition. All in all, it was an incredible year, and if i had to write EVERYTHING down, I probably would have to compile it in a book.....maybe I should!

These next few weeks are going to be just as exciting, with the Mamba Online Sexiest Man Competition (www.mambaonline.com) on the 1st December, and then the Philippines on the 5th where I will be addressing the media in a speech on HIV/Aids-Where we come from, and where are we going?

On top of all that, if all goes well and according to plan, I will be releasing my Debut Single to the public during my stay in Manila and it will be available for you to download from my blog and other available sites, so keep your eyes on this spot!

I have to date not come across an organization that is so fully dedicated to helping the LGBTI community, in ALL its facets, needs and concerns, as OUT is. With their involvement in the advocacy of the LGBTI community in the realm of equality in SA, OUT has shown that they truly stand as representatives of the entire community and are a Presence to the general public and an organization which stands firm in its beliefs and serves to protect the rights of its community.

With regards to work on grassroots level, OUT has proven to be a definite forerunner when it comes to research on the Health and Well-being of the LGBTI community with Projects such as their PRISM Project, which is aimed at not only the distribution of prevention methods, but also educational tools such as pamphlets, flyers and open days, while also offering support groups and counselling (both via web-access, telephonic or personal) to members of the public. Along with this they offer comprehensive treatment at their PRISM Lifestyle Centre where services such as HIV Testing, Counselling and General Physical Examinations are conducted by trained and friendly staff.

As Mr Gay South Africa 2009/Mr Gay World 2010, it truly is an Honour to be associated with OUT. As the nature of my work is on a global scale, it is not always easy to touch base on ground level as much as I would like and I am grateful to organizations such as OUT for their ability to reach out to the community in such a great manner.

On behalf of the Mr Gay South Africa and Mr Gay World organizations I would like to congratulate OUT for their incredible service to the LGBTI over the past fifteen years and wish them luck in their future endeavours! Happy Birthday and may the next fifteen years be even more successful than the last!

SAME SEX PARENTS GAIN VICTORY AT HOME AFFAIRS

We (Desmond & I) finally have our Unabridged Birth Certificates in hand, that reflect both our names. It's been an uphill battle with Home Affairs the past 3 months, but with perseverance and support from family, friends and other parents we got it done.

I have been informed by Home Affairs official that the changes made on the system will be permanent and that the changes will apply to all citizens of South Africa.

Now same-sex parents would be able to register their children without complications.

The unabridged birth certificate will reflect Parent 1 and Parent 2.

Further to the above, new forms are available at all DHA (Department of Home Affairs) offices, we are liaising with Home Affairs to inform us of the documentation numbers, e.g. DHA 24 so that when you do go to DHA you can ask for the forms and get things done right from the start, without having to go back and forth.

THE CRITERIA FOR THE WINNER:
The directors have stated again that the criteria of Mr. Gay World (http://www.worldwidemrgay.com/) , to which Mr. Gay South Africa is licensed and must adhere, are as follows:

1. The primary purpose of Mr. Gay World is to identify leaders who will take responsibility of being a spokesperson not only in his own community but on a global stage speaking out for equal and human rights. WMG is a positive role model and will work on humanizing being gay in the media both queer and mainstream.
2. Regional producers are responsible for selecting which delegates will represent their region as the best possible spokesperson for local culture, ideas and equal and human right challenges.
3. The Competition includes athletic tests and extensive interviews with our panel of judges. Judging points are based on a diverse set of criteria including qualities in charisma, leadership, personality, appearance and communication.

The SMS competition, which counts for 25% of the marks, and where the community chooses their favourites, will be launched in the next few days.

Barry Vorster, one of the directors said: “This leg is extremely important as the community will get to have their say and makes out such a huge part of the score that it could determine the ultimate winner. The results of the vote will be made known by the SMS provider at the GRAND FINALE in a transparent and open manner.”

CALIFORNIA GAY MARRIAGES BANNED UNTIL 2011

"A California appeals court has extended the ban on gay marriages until the end of the year. After US District Judge Vaughn Walker ruled that the ban was unconstitutional, weddings were meant to begin on Tuesday at 5pm. Opponents of same-sex marriages made a last minute dash to the 9th District Court of Appeals last night, successfully arguing that the ban should stay in place until they have appealed. The court demanded that gay marriage opponents must argue why they have the legal standing to bring the case to court.

"I grew up in fear, and I'm used to it. After a while, the fear becomes a part of life and you stop being afraid."

This is a statement made by an Iranian Gay Rights Activist. In a short article written on Gay life in Iran, some of the people tell of having secret social meetings where they are able to be open to each other and share their stories, while other speak of being set up, kidnaped and raped by Iranian militia.

When he recalls what he went through, he describes it as if it was a nightmare.

"At that moment when they blindfold you, even though you expect terrible things to happen, you still don't believe it," he says. "I simply cried. When they beat you it's like a dream, you think you'll wake up at any moment."
He almost can't recall the rape, because he fainted almost immediately and woke up to find himself naked and alone in the room.

Hey there folks

With Johannesburg's Gay Pride around the corner (http://www.joburgpride.org/) I have come across a lot of debate over whether or not there is still a need for PRIDE marches, especially in SA. Some people feel that we have gained what we wanted and we now have a pretty liberal constitution that allows us the rights we once fought for. Some feel that it should be tansformed into a different kind of celebration or sorts and others feel that it should just be taken away completely as it has become a specticle to the 'straight' world out there and paints a wrong picture of what it means to be gay.

I have posted a new poll to see what you guys out there feel. Is there a need for Pride Parades? What is your opinion on Pride? Has it become a spectacle, or does it still have a very important role to play in our society? Why do you really attend Pride?

I thought you guys might find it interresting:

A hormonal treatment given to pregnant mothers who are at risk of giving birth to babies with ambiguous genitalia is raising concern among some researchers and gay activists because the treatment also decreases the likelihood that the baby will grow up a lesbian, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The General idea is to prevent the developement of 'ambiguous genitalia' but there is a concern that Prenatal Dexamethasone Therapy might be the first step to genetically engineering your child's sexual orientation, in other words, parents can choose to engineer their kids to NOT be gay.

Needless to say, this leaves us with quite a few questions and cencerns for the unborn child.

What truly determines sexuality or even more so sexual orientation in the womb? What if the born child realises that the organs he/she was 'engineered' with are not what he/she wants? Does this kind of treatment really 'cure' homosexuality, and why the heck do you need a cure for Homosexuality in the first place? Does it mean they will also be able to engineer people to NOT be homophobic?

THE SOUTH REGIONAL FINALS FOR MR GAY SOUTH AFRICA 2010

The South Regional Finals of Mr. Gay South Africa 2010 was held in Cape Town on 07 August 2010 at The Glen Boutique Hotel in Sea Point with Chris Hattingh, manager and co-owner, who hosted the event.
The judges were Mr. Gay South Africa 2009 finalist Shahin Eskandar, renowned Brazilian fashion designer and previous coordinator of the Miss Universe™ pageant in West Africa, Luiz de la Ja; Gary de Klerk, experienced Mr. Gay South Africa™ judge and editor of Pink Tongue; and Blaine Shapiro-Dodds, brand executive of radio station Good Hope FM.
The contestants competed in an interview section, which counted for 50% of their total, and in formal wear, jeans and underwear by Bone Wear, the Official Underwear Sponsor of Mr. Gay South Africa™.

The winner, who was announced after the top five were called to the stage in matching black sports shirts with the South African flag prominently displayed, was André Lammers, 23, a drama student and part-time model, who is finishing his studies this year. First runner-up was 34-year old Errol Stroebel, food and beverage manager of the well-known Cullinan Hotel, who was also placed in the Mr. Cape Town Pride pageant and 2nd runner-up was Ernest Gravett, whose supporters made up a very lively first row of the audience. Wandile Mbunyuza of Khayelitsha, a volunteer worker for Health 4 Men, took the Mr. Personality crown.

I had the honour to be a judge at Babylon's firt ever Face Of Babylon Competition!

I was truly pleased at the well organised event and the support for the communtiy was incredible!

what I loved about it the most was the fact that they did not lable it a "Mr or Ms" Babylon. This left room for a variety of entrants, something far more appropriate and suited for members of the Rainbow Flag!The entertainment was provided by some of Joburg (and definately SA's) BEST drag artists and truly made the event even more worth while attending (not a lot of extroadinary acts out there anymore, but these girl had the crowd eating out of their hands).

But the man (in this case) of the hour was no other than Andre J. Smith, a 23 year old guy with more to him than meets the eye! From the word "GO" he had the adience cheering away and ater hearing his introduction speech, i could see this man meant bussiness! Needless to say, he walked off with not just the title of FACE OF BABYLON, but also with Best Personality as well as Best Dressed. He truly fulfilled ALL those roles and suffice to say, I made him swear on his grave that he would enter Mr Gay South Africa 2010-lol!

Hey there all

Last week I posted a question to you all from a lady who was concerned about the treatment kids with gay parents get in school. There were a lot of mixed emotions concerning this topic. A few of you felt that we as gay couples have the right to have kids, that it formed part of our rights in society and that the problem lay more with the education children received from their parents with regards to people/families who were 'different' to them. Others felt that it was not fair to the children to be put through even more pressure at school than what they already face on a daily basis.I thank you for all your input.

Today, I am posting a letter I received from a gay couple who recently became fathers. This time we get to see things from the parents point of view. I think you might find this interresting:

"Since the birth of our twins, 13 June 2010, we have battled with Home Affairs to get our twin boys registered with both our surnames.

Due to the recent change on the Children's Act, we did not have to undergo the procedure of adoption. As I am the biological and natural father to the children and we are married, we only had to submit our application to the High Court to declare us as the legal parents. Which we have done and the High Court signed a Court Order on 22 June 2010, declaring us the legal parents.
According to Home Affairs staff, we as a same-sex couple can not register our children with both our surnames due to the fact that a man can not give birth to a child. Home Affairs insists that the birth mother's name should be listed on the birth certificates. However the High Court has signed a Court Order declaring my husband and I as the legal parents to the children. We have completed all the necessary applications for re-registration on 29 June 2010, documents were only handed to Home Affairs head office (by hand) on 02 July 2010. Home Affairs has been sitting with our applications and all other related documents for over a month now, only when I called the offices did they started making work of our case. We have been lied to by staff of Home Affairs, whereby they told us that our applications were with their legal department and that they were awaiting an instruction from their legal department. Subsequently I have found out (from the legal department, Litigation Officer) that our case was only brought to their attention on 05 August 2010.

It has been well over a month now that we have been waiting for the Abridge Birth Certificates. I have written emails and have spoken to several people, and still I am being told that they are looking into the matter. Today our case has been brought to the attention of the Office to the Director-General, thanks to the Democratic Alliance for their assistance. However, this being said I must still wait until Thursday to see if the next person could do anything about the registrations. When gay-marriages were legalized, Home Affairs had done all the necessary changes on all documents pertaining to registration of the marriage. However they have not made any attempt to make the necessary changes on the Registration documents for the registration of a child/ren born to same-sex couples through surrogacy.

When a heterosexual couple register a child that was born to them through surrogacy, there seems to be no questions asked as there is a male and female listed as father and mother of the child. But when two men or two women want to register a child/ren born to them through surrogacy, a thousand questions are asked and rude remarks are passed. In my view and opinion it is nothing but discrimination against gay people and I find it a violation of my human rights. The fact of the matter remains that in 2001 a similar case was brought to the constitutional court and the High Court then made a ruling that section 5 of the Childrens Act of 1987 was unconstitutional.

In nine years Home Affairs have done nothing to change any documentation pertaining to the registration of children born through surrogacy to same-sex couples."

Ok, so for those of you who were wondering what the whole 'Solar Flares and such 'heading was about, i was just thinking maybe the Solar Flare had something to do with it.

I recently spoke to a lady about the idea of one day wanting Children of my own. She replied with the question: "Do you think its right, I mean for Gay Couples to have kids?" I responded by asking her what she meant by that question? She said that she knows a gay couple who's kids are in the same school as her grand children, and that these kids are constantly being teased because their parents are 'diferent' that the others and she didnt feel that it was fair on the kids to be put through such issues.

So, this weeks poll is this (and im going to post the very word she asked me): IS IT FAIR ON THE KIDS TO HAVE GAY PARENTS?

So without any doubt I'm sure you all will aggree with me that this week's major story is the judgement on Proposition 8.
For those of you who do not know yet, U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker this week declared Proposition 8 uncostitutional and said that "California "has no interest in differentiating between same-sex and opposite-sex unions". The ruling was the first in the country to strike down a marriage ban on federal constitutional grounds. Previous cases have cited state constitutions. Ok, so this has been a VERY jam packed week with little bits and bobs running aroud all over the place! I thought i'd give you just a quick run down of whats been happenning in and around!

So this weekend saw Mr Gay South Arica choose their two representatives from the Central Region. Congratulations to Jared Smit and Prince Mkhize. From what i could see it looked like a seriously well organised event, but then again, i would not expect anything less from the incredible team at Mr Gay South Africa. When it comes to events, they know how to host! This leaves only the South Regional finals and the Jozi Finals to be held before we all wizz off on the Cruize, a highlight in the competition (also as 50% of the guys total mark in the competition is judged on the ship). Then on the 26th November, its out with the old and in with the New as we elect a representative for the Gay Community of SA for 2010/2011. This very lucky man will have the privilege of attending the M Gay World Finals to be held in Manilla, Phillipines, in March 2011, and who knows, maybe we get to keep the title on African soil!

THE VERY LATE UPDATE!-PART DUEX

So anyway, i came back form Berlin, literally packed our backs and three days later we hopped in the car and off to Jozi (for those who don't know, Jozi is what we call Johannesburg) we went!

Patrick and i have been in Jozi for the better part of a month now. Initially i was a bit nervous. I remember our last night in Cape Town, what was supposed to be a quick drink and a goodbey became an entire night of goodbeys, as we went past every one of our favourite spots and naturally bumped into people we knew.

The next day, after saying goodbey to one of my best friends Mo, I had to contain myself (or burts out in tears). We were finally doing it, finally taking that step! I think both Patrick and I had thoughts of turning back, which we both held in until we were too far to turn back!

A month down the line, i must admit that i am enjoying Jhb! Thanks to friends and family that make it worth while being here, not to mention the new friends and family we have met and come to know over the past four weeks! Thank you to you all!

I think both of us have fallen into the Jhb groove and i personally look forward to what Jozi has to offer!

Oh, and if you were wondering what is what that i learnt during my trip to Berlin?

Imagine, walking down a street, and through a GATE that was once a check point that segregated people, in a City and Country that was once the epicentre of a World War, but now Hosts one of the worlds LARGEST Gay Pride events annually! It amazed me once again that not long ago there was NOTHING there. Not long ago, you were killed for being different. Today i can walk down that same street, pass through the same gate and be a tourist in that very city and feel FREE

So today i posed a question to you all out there. It something that has been on my mind for some time now and i think at one point or another we ALL end up thinking about it.

What happens to the elderly gay community once they 'fall off the gaydar' and they have reached their proverbial expiery date?

This is obviously not just pertaining to men, but also to women and the rest of the LGBTI community. In what a friend of mine would like to call the 'GAY STOCK EXCHANGE' it seems that at some point we all face our individual 'retirement-plan' and unless you are loaded with cash or have the good body or wear the right clothes etc, you are pretty much going to end up being one of those guys (or girls) who either sits alone at home, or a room, without any real friends (maybe) or on the corner of a bar looking at all the young ones passing by and thinking to yourself, 'wow....those were the days....' only to go home again, alone.

What if there was a place that granted you the peace of mind to know that you were surrounded by your peers, not necesarily a partner, but just good riends around you. What if you were in a place where you knew you were being looked after in you old age, by professional people. What if you knew you were still important to the community, the village that you helped build.

Heya!

Ok, so first order of the day is to apologise for my VERY late posting. its been quite a while, but lemme explain!

About three weeks ago i boarded the plane for another trip to a foreign country. This time i set my course for Berlin, where i was to attend the Christopher Street Parade. Now for those of you who don't know, Christopher Street is in the West village, New York City. this used to be the hub of gay life in the 70's. It is also the street on which you would find Stonewall Inn. its patrons started a series of riots in 1969 and this is seen to be the initiation of the gay libration movement. In short, today, we have have these guys, and Christopher street to thank for our Gay Pride, and Berlin hosts one of the Biggest Christopher Street Parades in the world.

So anyway. it just seemed right that i go. Now this was not a social call. It was the first time i got to sit down with Eric and Tore, Directors of Mr Gay World, after the competition. I arrived on the Thursday morning and was accomomdated at the lovely Kempinski Hotel Adlon, thanks for that Bruce, it was truly such a great experience. On the Friday evening, once everybody had arrived from their respective countries, MR GAY EUROPE, Sergio Lara also being there, we attended a VIP Evening hosted by AIR FRANCE/KLM at the lovely Kempinski Adlon. here we got to meet with Celebrities and the like from Germany and it was an honour to be there as Mr Gay World representing the Greater Gay community.

The next morning we had just enough time for an early breakfast before Sergio, Eric and I headed off to Patrick Hellmann or our fitting. From the fitting it was straight back to the hotel to drop off our gear, then head off to the start of the parade where Sergio and i hopped onto the first Float and so began the four hour procession to the endline and the Brandenburger Gate, where a big concert would be held that evening with internatioal Dj's and artists, but our duties were not done yet, we still had a photoshoot! Back at the Hotel Sergio and I got out of our pride gear and into the suits for the Kempinski Shoot, in the Presidential Suite. Now to give you an idea, this suite is the very suite that the Late King, MJ, dangled his baby rom the window. so ther was a certain sence of awe about it. :)

Long story short, Saturday came and went and and I finally got into bed at about 3pm having sat in meetings for most of the night.

Sunday morning, was my last day in Berlin, so i managed to get some sight seeing done and get my hands on a few gifts for the folks back home. i made it back to the hotel just in time to pack, take a few more pics and head on down to the concierge where my ride was waiting. with my total trip coming to 4 days, i had a lovely long flight back home to think about what the weekend was all about. What did i learn? What will the fruit be from this trip?

Can you FEEL it, it is HERE!

So yesterday saw the first game of the first ever FIFA world cup soccer to be held on the African continent!

If there was excitement among fans across the world because they get to see their favourite teams again play in this world class tournament, then you can bet that here in South Arica it was amplified by a million! From the night before when the (first ever) official pre-party was held, you could feel the excitement build up. You could hear the sound of Vuvuzelas blurting out their signature tone from a distance and as the day of the game drew near, so did their sound!

With my own nerves and excitement building up on Friday morning (having to go for an interview at the German Consulate) I could feel a change in the air. The cheerful sound of fans walking the streets (blowing their vuvuz) greeting each other as if they knew each other for years, made me think back to the time of the World Cup Rugby in 1995, and how it had brought our country together. Once again, people had forgotten about what separated us, and focussed on the one thing that not only brought us together, but brought the whole world together on an equal platform, or should I say pitch. Interesting how a sport, where you’d expect fan rivalry and separation, was the one thing that brought people together!

I took a proverbial ‘step back’ and looked at the crowd that had filled up the seats at La Vie (where we ended up watching the Bafana Game). The place was filled with avid soccer fans, as well as people whom had never watch a match in their life (including myself). When that first goal was scored I vividly remember ALL of us jumping up as if we had all just received a jolt of electricity at the same time! The excitement and camaraderie (and vuvu-sounds) that came from that was incredible and I could only ask myself one question…

Mr. Gay World 2010 at Your Fingertips!

Hey ya'll!

It's a while since I updated my blog. The reason being that this past fortnight has been a bit of an adjustment for me. As some of you might know, Patrick and I are in the process of moving to Johannesburg. I have to admit, its both daunting and exciting as it's a new starts in a new city and along with that comes the unknown, but both of us have confidence in knowing that its all going to be OK.

It's been an interesting time since I have left my old job. I have been trying to focus more on future projects I would like to take on as Mr Gay World. I also attended a March for the two guys from Malawi, Steven and Tiwonge. By now I'm sure you all know who they are and also the end result of their fate. I must admit I was ecstatic when one of my friends, Kevin Moore called me up on Saturday afternoon, telling me he had just heard they were released. Within seconds the news spread like wild fire! At the end of the day, our voices were heard, because we all took a stand and became the voice for people who could not speak for themselves!

ON A DIFFERENT NOTE: Some of my travelling arrangements have changed. Unfortunately I will not be able to make it to NYC Pride this year, but I will be in Berlin from the 17th -20th June! So if you are in the area, come and say hi, or just come and have a good time in Berlin.

Hey there ya'll.

So on 20 May 2010 Steven and Tiwonge will be sentenced on charges which are deemed 'against the order of nature'.

It's shocking to think that this extreme form of homophobia still goes on in the world, but this is the law in Malawi. I'm urging everybody, worldwide to show your support, audibly, visually and in which ever capacity you can to these two men. We need to make our voices heard!

Steven and Tiwonge, my thoughts are with you.

Hey there guys and girls!!

So today is International Anti-Homophobia Day!

I have posted a story below (How Crazy Is This) about a scenario that happened a few years ago! It pretty much portrays the ignorance still out there when it comes to Homophobia in our Country and the world.

On that note, I want to thank you guys, RS and Henko for your replies on my last post. RS, I fully agree with you that education is the key. As I said once in a radio interview, Homophobia is a fear. People fear what they don't kno,. so unless they are educated, they will continue to fear. It is up to every one of us to educate our brothers and sisters. Show them that being gay is NOT a threat to them.
Henko, most certainly it takes time, and as you say, a lot of it! So yea, as Gandhi once said, Be the change that you want to see. Change starts with ME!

On this day, remember our brothers and sisters who might not have it as easy as we do. Those in African Countries and around the world where Homosexuality is still TABOO! Think of them and remember where we come from. I see a future where we are not judged by our Sexuality but by our Character. Most importantly, as a Wise Teacher once said:

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF, AND DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE DONE UNTO YOU!

HOW CRAZY IS THIS!!!

So on this Anti-Homophobia day, here is a story that I found rather interesting in the news papers today!

A lady from Pretoria (one of our Capital Cities), has instituted a damages claim to the value of R1.5mil against a member of her church. Apparently while attending a birthday social of a friend’s father (aged 74) in 2007, Munnik (the lady) and Mrs De Beer (who lives on the same property as the birthday boy), got into an argument where Mrs De Beer accused Munnik of being an “insult to Christianity” because she was gay, and told her she would go “straight to hell”. Other claims are that Mrs De Beer then kicked Munnik between the legs in an attempt to “convert” Munnik, and proceeded to do so until she lost consciousness!

I just find it funny that it’s a disgrace to be gay and we’ll all go to hell, but its OK for you, Mrs De Beer, a devoted Christian apparently (judging by the extreme measures to ‘convert’ Munnik) to kick another woman between the legs to the point of unconsciousness!

Here is an interesting topic. one of my Facebook friends sent me this scenario that he is faced with in his country.
The question i want to ask you guys is this: How does changing laws really affect people? How does it affect you and I, the everyday person on the street. Take a read and give me your thoughts! Enjoy!

I dont know if you are aware of it but here in India we as homosexuals lead a taboo life...
Last year on 2nd july, Homosexuality was decriminalised by the Delhi high court, we celebrated, partied, cherished.
We have gay parties in every major city across the country every week.
We evn have big queer parade every year in every major city again.
Recently Mumbai hosted a very big event. An international queer film festival. Thy hosted nd projected more than 50 movies with varied subject, languages, country..but the same theme of Homosexuality. A big success.
.
But how wuld it change the life for a common individual like me?
For me i still cant hold hands in public. There are individuals brutally burned, subdued, killed for their sexuality.
Here public perceive homosexuals as demons, omen, badluck, embarassment, joke, insult, etc etc.

India is collectively made of Thousands of villages, hundreds of languages, hundreds of religions, divided in caste, creed, sect, status and power. And evn u wont deny that there is an obvious possibility that there are lakhs of my brothers who are still in closet or forced to stay in them for the sake of their lives.
.
How are we planning to reach them through expensive snobbish, arrogant, fake, dirty, sexually dominated meaningless parties??
Or international film festivals where entry is strictly through registration. Who attends them? You know right..higher class of intellectuals, rich social thinkers?
.
.We are sucking in every plan.
And i wonder why nobody wants to think real and out of the box...parties, parades, films, etc thy hav only gay crowd attending it...do we have to target them or the common hetero homophobic or homoillitrate man?

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!!!

So Patrick and I have been back from the Pink Loerie festival in Knysna for two weeks now and i have to congratulate Coenie Kukkuk and his incredible team (as well as the Council of Knysna who make this possible every year) for an amazing Festival! It was my first Pink Loerie and boy did we have a great Time! We barely got there and i went right into interviews with the contestants for the Mt Mardi Gras Competition which was held on the Friday evening at Zanzibar.

The evening went real smooth and i am proud to say that we have our first two entries in the Mr Gay South Africa 2010 Competition. Congrats to the winner of Mr Mardi Gras, Dustin Carr, and also his runner up, Mr Ledgends, Karl Heinz Michel. I look forward to seeing your progress in the Mr Gay South Africa competition. Good luck to both of you!

I also want to thank the organisers, esp John-Louis for the incredible accomodation they arranged for Patrick and I at the Beautiful Alexander Guest House. Situated on the Knysna Heads, this gem offers

incredible views and a peaceful, serene break away from the hustle and bustle! Thanks to Wayne and his awesome staff for making us feel at home, away from home! and by the way, we LOVE the Honeymoon suite......

So this is also my last week at Cafe M and the beginning of a new chapter in my life. In two weeks time ill be heading to Jozi and starting on a few projects that i have had in mind, which include a fundraiser and also an up and coming book!But more on these later!

I'll also be heading to New York City at the end of June for the NYC Pride, so all you guys in USA, ill be seeing you all real soon! Also on the agenda are other trips around Europe, including EuroPride, and especially the Cologne Gay Games which i look forward to!

Post Event Press release from LGBT NAMIBIA

As a future platform to represent the LGBT community in the Namibian society, LGBT Network salutes the efforts made so far by the Rainbow Project and Sister Namibia. LGBT Network plans to make a difference in the country by uniting Namibians from all sexual orientations under the auspices of the organisation and will work closely with existing organisations to ensure that Namibia continues to foster an environment where gay, lesbian and straight Namibians can live a full and productive life and do their share towards the Namibian society.

During a spectacular event, the LGBT community has taken a step forward and launched the ‘LGBT Network Namibia’ on Saturday the 24th, to create a platform for Namibians with a unconventional sexual orientation to come together and unite with a common goal of Equality For All. LGBT Network – Namibia, stands for the proposition that all people are created equal and worthy of the same rights to freedom, liberty, and equality.

After registration the event started when the guests boarded the chartered catamarans and left from Walvis Bay Harbour. The journey carried the guests through a special interaction with the marine life towards its remote and isolated destination. Here guests was surprised by the beautiful white marquee tent dressed to impress with the rainbow flags proudly on display.

Speeches was presented by The Mayor of Walvis Bay, The British Vise Counselor, Manual, a special note from Gavin Borrageiro, Manager to Mr Gay World and a note from the controversial author, Andre Carl van der Merwe.
Guests were honoured by the speech of Mr Gay World, Charl van den Berg. His words touched the hearts of everyone present. It finally became clear that Namibia is starting to set the pace for Africa which clearly exited Charl.

The board accompanied Charl on a quad bike tour on his day of departure and so cemented a lifelong friendship. This was a big step while even bigger steps will follow. But with support from all over the world it will only be successful.

The delicious BBG was served buffet style and the guest was undoubtedly starting to enjoy themselves as they relaxed with glasses of wine.
The organisers are very thankful for the multitude of sponsors that has given so wholeheartedly. Without them, it is clear that this day would not have been as successful.

MY DESERT EXPERIENCE!

So firstly, i would like to apologise for being so slack on updating you all with what's been happening in 'Mr Gay Land'. I'ts been a hectic few weeks for me with major changes taking place in my life and some big choices being made. One of them of course being the resignation from my current job as manager at Cafe Manhattan Sea Point. It feels like an end of a journey for me. After three years i will be saying goodbey to the place that has played such a crucial role in me being where i am today. I would like to thank Russell and the entire RSG group for giving me the opportunity to grow and learn from you all.
The OTHER BIG step im taking is to move to Johannesburg along with Patrick, the man that has managed to grab a hold of my heart and keep it close to his. I'ts a challenge, with both of us having to deal with the fact that we have to start a life in Jozi and make a new beginning, yet it all seems ok when i realise that he is there next to me! I love Patrick, and i look forward to the new journey you and i will share!

Ok, ok, ok, so enough with the cheezzzz!!!! :)

I have just walked out of a lovely pampering session at the spa here at the Pelican Bay Hotel after an awesome day of Seal watching and oyster eating and Champaign drinking in Walvis Bay Namibia!

You might ask what the heck am i doing on this side of the world! I mean, isn't it just desert and mining and pretty much um....nothing? Well, you could see it that way, and honestly initially, so did I, but after the day I had today, I can tell you that you can watch this space because a major change is happening in Africa, and yes, it's started in Namibia!
About a month or so ago a gentleman by the name of Chris de Villiers invited me to attend the launch of their LGBTI network to be held in Walvis Bay. I agreed, and yesterday I hoppen on a flight to Namibia!

Upon arrival i had to laugh because yes, there was desert, and mining and, um...pretty much nothing, but it was the heart of the people, the sincerity and their genuine eagerness to bring about change that got my head into a flat spin and once again stirred me up. I realised that this was a community, as small as it may be, that were up for the challenge of fighting for equality for the LGBTI. From the moment i set foot on land i was welcomed like a king and shown hospitality that truly outshines most. Needless to say, it left me humbled and i want to thank all the people who were involved in getiing me to Namibia and making my stay possible! thank you to all the sponsors and organisers. Your efforts are truly noted!

I want to thank Chris and his incredible team of organisers for putting together an event that truly made an impact and brought union among its members and stirred up PRIDE! You can be proud of what you guys have acheived in four months, from 4 to 53 members!! That is incredible and i can only imagine that flame spreading into other countries as they see the change that has come about in Namibia! This is what i mean when i say "CHANGING THE WORLD ONE HEART, ONE COUNTRY ONE CONTINENT AT A TIME"!
I look forward to working with you guys in the very near future and know that you guys can count on me to be there for you! We need more of you in this world! :)

However, it is now Saturday afternoon and i am here for one more day. Tonight is the after party and tomorrow we go quad-biking in the desert!!! heeehaaaw!So lets pray i don't break my neck! lol

I have been back from

Canada

for over a week now and it is usually during this time where I look through the photos that I took and recap, as it always feels so surreal while I am travelling. It has been a whirlwind month for me as Mr. Gay World 2010 and I can already feel this is going to be a year I will NEVER forget! It feels monumental and something I will look back upon and think WOW!

The 10 days I spent in Whistler was not a holiday but a serious mind opener in so many ways. I was able to take to mind the fact that I had won a World Title - just an ordinary person born in Bloemfontein,

South Africa

and now Mr. Gay World 2010. I have met so many people along my travels in Canada and made some good friends. This has made me realise that the way I see the world was about to change and expand more than I ever imagined.

Whistler is beautiful, a quaint town of about 10,000 people where everybody seems to know everyone. The locals soon made me feel like part of the ‘family’ and at our first ‘Après Ski’ that the friendships were solidified. During the Winter Olympics each country had a ‘House’, a kind of safe haven, where people could go to get a touch of familiarity and socialise. It was appropriate that the LGBT community established a ‘House’, which would lead into Winter Pride. The Pride House hosted various activities during the week such as Wine tasting, Oscar night and Education on various topics pertaining to the Global LGBT Village. The House, run by Dean Nelson, his partner and an incredible team of volunteers they offered a ‘home away from home’, and I found myself hanging out there regularly.

I was fortunate enough to have a set agenda of activities and flexible schedule, which enabled me to take part in events such at Dogsledding, Zip-trekking through one of the oldest rain forests of Whistler and the Blackcombe Mountains. A particular highlight was taking one of the longest Gondola rides up the Mountain, approximately 20-minutes, to try out some snowboarding! I would love to say that I succeeded, but well let us leave it at that! Winter Pride ended off with an incredible evening on top of the Mountain at The Roundhouse, where we had World Class entertainment and food. My final days were spent sight seeing and I was able to witness the Paralympic Flame as it made its way through the Town en route to Vancouver. Once again, I had a sensory overload and if I had to relay everything about my trip, I would sit here writing in detail everything possible to explain to you, but one thing I take with me is the diversity of our global village! The village I represent in all its glorious diversity!

I would like to thank every person who made this trip possible! Eric Butter, Tore Aasheim and Dean Nelson and the rest of the Mr. Gay World team - you people are amazing! Carlos Melia, thanks for sorting out all the travel arrangements. Then to Gavin B, my Manager, for holding the fort, thanks so much, you are a star!

JUST A QUICK WHISTLE!

Hey ya'll!

A friendly greeting here from Whistler, Canada!

It's a beautiful day here with Winter Pride kicking and going strong on its 3rd day!
I have so far had a good time here with the friendly locals, and the town filling up once again for what promises to be a good weekend! I must admit, I am yet to get on a Gondola and head up the mountain for some snowboarding (yes, I do prefer it to skiing - just looks cooler), so I'm sure that within the next two days I'll be heading up there!

Other than that I have had some good thinking time too and this has given me a great opportunity to get my 'ducks in a row' so to speak and work on what I have planned for this year. All i can say for now is that it is gonna be BIG, of GLOBAL proportions, so hold on, its going to be a GOOD year! A year, once again of PROBABILITIES!

I will try and post some pictures as soon as im able to, so please bear with me!

Another Week of Excitement

Hi All,

This past week has once again made me realise the extent of my responsibilities and work involved as the worldwide spokesperson for the LBGT community. I have tried to live my life as normal as possible, but my title has shown me that things are not always as they appear. There is an element of normality, unknown and the expanse that is the rest of the world. The gravity of the unknown and the world is making me realise that you need an experienced and committed team to help you deal with your professional and personal life on a global scale.

My team and I have been working on various issues, but this requires serious multi-tasking, to make everything happen concurrently. As a result, I have completed a full-length interview, nearly 20-minutes long, with a production crew for a national TV show. I had to fly into Johannesburg late on Thursday evening, to secure my Canadian Visa, and as part of my International travel itinerary. However, upon my arrival at 22H30, I had to do an interview for a Canadian Breakfast show, which showed me that somewhere in the world someone is awake and doing business.

I thought that my weekend would be restful leading up to my departure, but Saturday started at 07H30 to get ready for my first Social Event, where International Performers, Business People and VIP guests had confirmed their attendance. The guest list was overwhelming and a true baptism of fire to the world of hosting a function for influential people – business and social. Nevertheless, the event was a great success with The Twelve Tenors spending most of the day with my team and me. We (my Business Manager and me) had individuals like Jennifer Su (Radio & TV Personality), Edith Venter (PR Guru & Socialite) and her husband Johnny, Isla Galloway (Chairperson of Dauphin), Anne Power (Legendary Performer), Wilco Stemmett (Businessman), Liane Luriel (Prima Ballerina from SA Ballet) and Bennie Louw (Businessman) in attendance.

The event and atmosphere was so relaxed that it became an informal affair, where everyone kick-backed and appreciated the venue, company and comfortable surrounds. Formalities were quickly forgotten and we began to have fun making a cream mustache competition with our "new" friends from abroad – this showed me that no matter who are, a local celebrity or international performer, we are all just people that want to have fun and be ourselves. All societal expectations, pretences and norms get ignored – we are all just people being people having some fun.

After a hectic morning and start to the weekend, there was barely time for me to get ready for the airport before the flight to Canada. Anyway, I am now finally on my way to Vancouver, and will update you when you when I get back to SA. However, I must thank the following people, companies, for my time in Johannesburg and assisting with the event.

Life since winning the World Title

Wow! What an amazing experience and first two weeks. I want to thank you all personally for supporting me in my endeavours and goal of representing South Africa on a global stage. My fellow competitors were amazing and taught me a significant amount in diversity, cultural adversity and the challenges the LBGT community faces. This has clearly set the goals and objectives for my reign as their global spokesman and new Ambassador.

My first few days back home has made me realise the extent of the tasks that lay ahead, and it has been a whirlwind of events and interviews. However, the most humbling aspect has been the support I have received from all the communities within South Africa, and has made me proud to be a part of the Rainbow Nation that Mr. Mandela envisaged nearly four decades ago. I am proudly South African and embrace the diversity, potential and prospects the country offers on the eve of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Since, returning from my first trip abroad, I need to acknowledge the work and effort the local committee from Mr. Gay SA played in making the event possible and my representation in Oslo possible. Also, the sponsors and supporters of the event have made it comparable to other (major) local pageants.

As a result, my new independent advisors and publicists have enabled me to transition onto the global arena in a seamless manner, which has allowed me to maintain a sense of normality for the moment. Finally, a big thank you to the South African public, Mr. Gay SA, Mr. Gay World, Bone Wear, Collett Dawson and Gavin Borrageiro for everything you have done to help me since my return to SA.

2010-A YEAR OF PROBABILITIES!

Hey there all!
Well I trust everybody has recovered from the Christmas and New Years celebrations! Oh, a Happy New Year to you all! Cape Town is most certainly getting back to normal with most of the holiday makers having left for home and their normal lives. Not for too long though, as already we are making room for the influx of people that will be gracing our shores for the Soccer World Cup!!!

I can’t help but feel excited about this year! With such a hectic one behind us, the world is our oyster and yes, this year it’s not about POSSIBILITY, but PROBABILITY! I believe that whatever we put our minds to this year will PROBABLY come to pass! If you have a dream, a goal or a purpose, then this year is the year for you!! This year is the year it will PROBABLY happen!!! We are in such a privileged position in SA and I am reminded of the incredible impact our country felt at the 1995 Rugby World Cup! Remember how one event like that brought an entire nation together when we needed it the most? Remember how during that time people did not care about differences, but instead looked to the one thing that united them? Once again we are at that place! And if there is a difference to be made in our country and continent this year, then it is up to each and every one of us to find that ONE thing that unites us! And let me tell you, it’s not just the Soccer World Cup!
So this year is going to be a busy one for Mr Gay South Africa. As I was sitting with my diary last night, I realised how quickly 365 days are going to go by! But it’s going to be exciting and PROBABLY, at the end of it, we will be able to say, we made a difference! In a month from now, I’ll be heading to Oslo, Norway to compete in the Mr Gay World Ambassador Competition along with 32 other guys! I’m the only one representing not just SA, but also Africa. It is an honour to represent such an incredible country and continent that has so much to offer this world! I will make you all proud and fly the banner as high as I possibly can!

As for other events happening this year, watch this space! It’s going to be a year we will PROBABLY never forget!

"I AM A MAN, I JUST HAPPEN TO BE GAY"

Hey there folks!

so here is my weekly update for you guys and gals to read and comment on!

It once again made me proud to be a gay man today when i read the article about Welsh Rugby Hero Gareth Thomas who came out recently to the public. In a sport that is still pretty much stuck in old beliefs and mind sets, it is not easy to say 'hey there guys, i am gay!'. lets face it, we dont imagine the average rugby player to be gay, do we?

But for this man it was a moment in life which, as for so many of us, brought him relief- now being able to simply BE who he is, and at the same time worry- not knowing what the world might think! Yet he took that step and came out!

"Ive been through all sorts of emotions with this, tears, anger and absolute despair. I wasnt sure if I ever wanted people to know and, to be honest, I feel anxious about peoples reactions and the effect it might have on my family. i dnt want to be knows as a gay rugby player. I am a rugby player first and foremost. I AM A MAN. I just happen to be gay. Its irrelevant. What i do when i close the door at home has nothing to do with what i have acheived".
What was equally as incredible was the response he got from the community and fellow sportsmen in support for his descision to come out!
'Its very brave of him. Ive been there myself, so I know how hard it is, but as a player I think its probably even more difficult. He's made it easier for the next guy now; this is breaking new ground!!"-Referee Nigel Owens

I applaude you Gareth Thomas for taking such a BRAVE step and for standing up for who you are! I applaude you for breaking new ground and for opening the door so that other sportsmen and women can also take that step and just BE!

GETTING USED TO A NEW 'NORMAL'

Hey there!

Well, if week one was somewhat of a foretaste to what life as Mr Gay South Africa was going to be like, I tell you week two just topped it!

This was another week filled with media interviews and response from the public about Mr Gay South Africa, the pageant and such. With mixed opinions from everybody yet a general consensus that two weeks into my year, we have already been breaking down barriers and challenging mindsets and building a bridge. Let me explain why I say so…

Im sure by now you have all either read, or heard of the article in the Times regarding the nude shoots I did a while back. Well I tell you the response from that was astounding! I was so surprised at the diversity of the opinions. It made me realise just once again how incredible it is to live in SA. In my interview I did on Radio 702/ 567 Cape Talk (which btw was heard even in GREECE), I said that we had not come this far in SA for only one opinion to count. That is exactly what we have fought against in this country! As long as it is an opinion, and not something forced onto others, right. It seems like so far we have challenge mindsets, and got people thinking and talking about issues which are important to them, and let me tell you EVERY OPINION COUNTS, no matter what it is. But I am happy to say that most of the response has been positive, and also form both the gay and straight communities-there's that bridge! I really like to hear what you guys and girls have to say regarding things which are important to you! This is why I am here!

As my heading says, it’s been a challenge to get used to a new sense of ‘normality’. Seeing my face in publications such as the Pink Tongue, the People Magazine (nogal!), on websites and blogs etc, is rather weird! More so is getting used to being called ‘Mr Gay South Africa’ whenever people announce you to a crowd! For a split second I kind of look around wondering ‘mmm.,.who is it, who is it!’ only to hear my name! lol. But to me, im still me. Im still the Charl that my friends have known for so long. I’m still the Charl that serves you coffee in the morning at Café Manhattan! I’m till the same Charl, but with a greater responsibility to the community which he serves.

Also, some exciting news is that we launched Cape Town Pride this week at the lovely Adam and Eve lounge! I tell you its going to be a blast. With such a dedicated team of volunteers working on it, how can it not be! As much as it’s about celebration and parties, it’s also about creating social conscience within the greater community of Cape Town. I am Gay, and I am Proud of it! It is opportunities like these which set us apart form other countries in Africa where being gay can get you killed! (thinking of Uganda-even though that bill is not passed, the threat is still there). As someone said the other day, we in South Africa form the minority in Africa concerning human rights. We should be proud of being South Africans, and being FREELY GAY in it! This is how social consciousness is created, and this is how we change the world!

So what’s happening in the following week?

Well it remains to be seen I guess. I do know that I will be interviewed by a French journalist on Tuesday, so who knows where that will be published!!! Also ill be working on a small charity benefit and hope to have it sorted by the end of this week! Will keep you all posted!

MY FIRST WEEK AS MR GAY SOUTH AFRICA

Hey there all you people!!!

It’s been a week since the crowning of Mr Gay South Africa, and I must say, it has been a pretty hectic week!!! I would have liked to send out this letter sooner but I have been kept busy from the word go with trying to fall back into the swing of things in Cape Town, and also to get used to my ‘new sense of normality’. This is the first time I have actually had time to really sit down and think about the past few weeks and months. WHAT AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!!!
From the time we set our feet in Durban, all still pretty much ‘strangers’ to each other, but it took a nice meal and some socializing at @L’s in Ramsgate to quickly stir up a sense of brotherhood among us, thanks to Jaco and his crew over there! You guys ROCK!!! And Bennie, what a breath taking place you have…thanks for putting us up for the night! I think the only bad thing was having to wake up at 5am in the morning to make the trip back to Durban to board the Sinfonia-lol. There was definitely a sense of excitement despite the puffy eyes and yawns along the way and as we made our way to Durban I found myself thinking about just what we were about to embark on and I knew that this was going to be something special.
For four days we were pressed, and pushed beyond what most of us though we were capable of with a great choreographer Gerrit, and his assistant Jarrod, who took us through each step of the way with a stern hand, yet always with the utmost respect. Gerrit, I can still hear your words…..5 6 7 8 and 1 2 3…..! I love you man!!!! We had a great team looking after us and Peter (or mammie as he became known) it is not easy keeping 15 guys in line and at every venue when they needed to be…so BIG praise to you!!!! I look forward to working with you guys again!!!

So suffice to say, after a week of rehearsals and photo shoots (Duy and Nico……what an incredible team you make…thanks for making us all look awesome despite the bags and tiredness which often was rather obvious-lol!) we finally disembarked and headed off to the Airport. We arrived in Jozi and went straight from OR Thambo to the State Theatre to start rehearsals on the REAL stage. There we were met with the other members of the production, Anne Williams, Dame Judy Page, Jason Greer our stage manager Vanessa, and of course our Director of Operations, Juan Lerm, to name but a few! After another LONG day of rehearsals we finally got home at 23:00 and needless to say we all made a bee-line for our rooms and hopped into bed to catch up on some much needed sleep. The next morning was all systems go again and we got to the State Theatre at 9am! After we all had a go at getting an instant Caribbean tan, we were ready for dress rehearsals….well at least those who were not still sticky from the spray-on tan…lol…

The evening was something I will never forget. From the very first moment we made our appearance on stage to the end I had goose bumps (Jan, I know you know what I mean!) and I could not help BUT smile from ear to ear at the incredible turnout of over 1000 people! With compliments still going around at how incredible the show was, I can not help but feel honoured to say that I was apart of it!
Once again, what a great team to have been privileged, to work with. We ALL made it happen, and we all became a family, standing for one purpose.

Thank you to all the sponsors, the behind the scenes people (you truly were the backbone of the operation) the in front of the scenes people, the designers, choreographers, entertainers, and everybody who had a role in making this projects such a great success! THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN!

So what now?

Well, the work only begins now! The glitz and glam are over and its time to get busy! With a few projects in mind, ill try and keep you all updated about what will be happening this year, where ill be and when ill be there!

FINAL LEG!!!!

Well here we go!!! I have just about finished my last shift at work and am about to clock off! I have two days before I fly to Durban and will be spending it with my boy and some friends catching up on that much needed tan and the last bit of training. Once we get on that ship its full steam ahead to Mozambique and the Portuguese Islands where we will be doing some Photo Shoots, Interviews and Rehearsals in preparation for the Grand Finale!

I can not help the feeling of wanting to jump out of my skin. This is the first time I'll be leaving African soil so needless to say i am rather excited! What's more is that I have the honour of taking part in a National Competition, The Mr Gay Sout Africa Competition and I am proud to be a part of this prestigious event!

It has been a journey and a half I tell you! its taken dedication and at times having to keep myself grounded. Thank God for the Friends around me and my Boy who reminds me of who I am and that iIshould always stay true to myself and simply BE myself. Thanks to all of you!
T have been challenged these past three month far further than what I ever could have imagined and my hope is that when I look back at this, that I would have grown in maturity and integrity!

So iIwil try and keep all of you posted on the events as they unfold. I'm not sure how things on the ship will work in terms of communication, but I will try!

I say cheers for now, and will see you at the finish line. For those of you who will be in Jozi for the comp, I see you there, and for those who will not, I'll see you around!

ALMOST THERE

Well, it is Sunday 15 November 2009, and in precisely a week from now I will be in Durban, along with 14 of the most amazing guys in SA on our final evening before we embark on the last stretch of THE MR GAY SOUTH AFRICA COMPETITION!

All I can say is that I can't believe how fast 3 months have gone by, from that Saturday afternoon at the Cape Town Regional till now. It has been an amazing journey and something I know I will always remember. Up to know I have learnt more about myself than I think I ever have. I have realised my potential as a human being to be able to make a difference in my community and have also come to realise that I CAN do anything I put my mind to!

Looking back I am glad I entered this year’s competition. I knew that the bar had been raised and that it was definitely going to be a challenge to take up! And boy has it been a challenge so far!!!! But I love challenges as it always pushes me to grow and mature into a better human being!!

This is the final week of preparations and getting everything ready before I fly to Dbn and embark on the cruise! I really want to thank all of you whom have supported me throughout this competition and I promise to make you guys proud! Like I said right at the beginning, this is not just for me. But for you!!!
I do believe that I can be the next representative of the LGBT. Someone who can take it to the world and be that bridge, so that WE can bring a better understanding to those who might not fully understand what it means to be gay! I stand for every one of you and will do my best to represent you in the best way possible....by simply being WHO I AM and showing the world that it IS after all 'normal' to be gay. That it is not a sickness, disease, disposition or any of the 'concepts' or prejudices that people might have about it!!

In the end we all strive to live in this world and we all have a place under the sun to live a life free from judgement and condemnation. We are ALL made up of the same matter, we all breathe air, and we all eat, sleep, laugh and cry. With sooo much in common, why should there be a divide, right?

So here is to each and every guy and girl out there! Thanks for the continued support. I will be sure to hold that banner high and be the guy whom you all believe I can be!
(I will be thinking about you all as we cruise to Mozambique and the lovely Portuguese Island...sipping on a cocktail...enjoying the midnight feast...sandy beaches...sunny weather......you get the pic...lol)

hey there ALL!!!!

firstly i have to apologise for being sooo very quiet in posting on my blog!
but i n my defence, i have to say it has not been because i have been doing nothing. lol

this month has bee REALLY hectic as i have been busy with arrangements for my charity benefit i am doing for HEALTH4MEN. it has been such an exciting time for me and not to mention a HUGE learning curve in ALL aspects!
i have been amazed at the willingness of people to be involved in charity. they really DO want to give or help, but don't always know where and how.

let me tell you all one thing...this event promises to be BIG!
BIG artists, BIG prizes...and an even BIGGER CAUSE!!!!

so it is with great delight that i can say, i am pretty much done with the arrangements and it is now all systems go for this thing!! tickets have already been bought, and is still being bought....as we speak...lol...and i am excited to see all of you there!!

further more i am just humbled at what this experience has taught me....and i keep asking myself...."who am i that i should be so fortunate to be involved in this? (and i am talking about both the charity benefit and also the competition). the directors have really gone out of their way to make this an event to be remembered and to create opportunities for us as contestants to grab it and make something of it!!!

and so we shall, hey guys????

so yea, i have posted some interesting things for you guys to read about concerning the grand finale, so go check it out!!

next week ill be in Jozi for a day to do a shoot for the new calender....featuring the hottest gay guys in SA.....yep US!!!! lol

Who's that girl? If you're somewhat puzzled by the identity of that voluptuous air-hostess (boasting calves of steel and dressed in a baby blue uniform) that you might have spotted at a posh function or cabaret show, wonder no more: That outrageously imposing blonde woman is none-other than Cathy Specific, a flight attendant and stage performer extraordinaire. Cathy is also the star and co-writer of the musical comedy revue show, Mile High with Cathy Specific.

The Host: Jason Greer

Jason Greer was introduced to the events and entertainment industry in 2000 when he worked as an entertainment coordinator for the Rand Show. After a successful three years with this iconic event he had the opportunity, amongst other things,to work at MonteCasino as a Promotions MC.In the eight years since, Jason has worked as an MC and in the field of event production, and has learnt that no job is without its pressures and demands. These are the challenges he thrives on when taking an event to its successful conclusion.Having left SABC 3 at the end of March 2009, Jason can now be seen as one of the new faces on the M-Net new entertainment show, All Access, broadcast every Thursday night at 7.30pm. Fortunately, this still lends him time to continue to be actively involved in marketing and entertainment solutions with The ProduXion House. The Diva: Judy Page

Judy Page is a true-blue South African musical theatre Legend who’s played some of the stage’s most memorable roles - from Dolly Levi to Roxie Hart. Born in Zimbabwe, Judy first thought of making a career as a dancer, but she was persuaded to instead harness her singing talent. Moving to South Africa in the 1960’s she became a band vocalist and cabaret performer before breaking into musical theatre in the mid-70’s production of From Berlin to Broadway. She’s since appeared in countless stage musicals including The Sound of Music, The King and I and Mame.Those who thought that Chicago was first performed in South Africa in 2005, may be surprised to learn that Judy was our first local Roxie Hart in the 1977 production. She also played Mama Morton in a Port Elizabeth production in 2002.Her award winning career has included tributes to Brel, Sondheim, Piaf and Judy Garland, performing in Sun City extravaganzas and even a stint in the now cringe-inducing SABC Dallas-wannabe soap series Westgate in the 80’s. The Crooner: Timothy Moloi

Timothy Moloi is one of South Africa’s most extraordinary and yet up till now, unsung talents. With his smooth-as-velvet voice and masterful range, Moloi is an established and formidable singer with a talent that ranks up amongst the all-time greats. Highly revered and respected by his singing peers, Timothy has shared stages with some of the country’s finest acts, performed at some of the most prestigious events and been highly active in the music world, yet he has managed to remain, for the most part, out of the public eye. However, all that is destined to change with the 2009 release of his debut solo album through Thatch Music.

A Beautiful Stand We Made!

so this was an exiting week for me!

as i told you all in my previous post, i attended an Anti-homophobic rally this week at Beaulah Bar where i was interviewed on radio and asked a very interesting question.....

WHY DO YOU THINK SOME PEOPLE ARE HOMOPHOBIC?

it got me thinking about where we are as a nation with regards to this topic. i read an article in the Mail and Guardian about Pastor Ray McCauley and his involvement with Pres. Zuma in trying to change legislation concerning abortion and same sex marriages. i became rather concerned, as I'm sure most of you did, as the very laws that served to protect us as a people were threatened by the very people whom we put our trust in to rule our country. i also read in The Heat Magazine (not that i read Heat that often...kinda just browse through.....and not that there is anything wrong with Heat...we all like a bit of 'skinner' news from time to time...lol) how 18000 people joined a group on facebook in protest to a kiss which happened on one of our day- time soaps between two men...Are people still sooo intolerant to those different from them? is there still a serious threat to our constitution by people who serve only their own interests?
is Homophobia STILL so rife in a country that boasts to have THE most liberal constitution in the world?

so why are some people out there still HOMOPHOBIC?

well, i had about a minute to think about this one....literally, and my answer?
Phobia, is a FEAR, and people Fear what they don't KNOW. it is sad that people only see a small part of what BEING GAY is all about, and sometimes what they see is clouded by a stereotype. its is only through education, and awareness that people come to know and understand. if you know better, then you do better, right? and who are the educators? i dare to say....WE ARE. it is up to every single Gay man and woman to show 'homophobic' people out there that we are NO different than anybody else. that, just because we prefer partners of the same sex, doesn't make us any different to them. just BE WHO YOU ARE and show them that there is more to you than your sexual preference. we are all made of the same 'dust' and we will all return to that very same 'dust' one day!
as the 'good book' says...do unto others as you would have done unto you!

LET LIFE HAPPEN!

Hey Ya'll!!
its been about two weeks since i have done anything so i thought i would make up for it by giving my blog a NEW LOOK and some interesting news!!!

i am always amazed at how life works and how things turn out for the best, if you just allow space for development!!! sometimes WE tend to get in the way of the universe working its ways and so we get frustrated because nothing comes to fruition, when all along we simply needed to surrender to LIFE and let LIFE happen!

the past few weeks have been going really slow with arrangements concerning the fundraiser not seeming to get anywhere. i had sooo much on my mind with what i wanted to do, but thought about it so much that i never allowed it to grow on its own! until i was kindly reminded by two really awesome people that i needed to keep my focus on what the actual goal was. i realised once again that we can only do so much..then we need to surrender and let it grow. just like a child is unable to grow if its mother holds onto it, so our dreams and goals in life often get restricted, or even inhibited by our own efforts to ' hold on' to them.

so on Tuesday i went to have a meeting with Glen De Swart from HEALTH4MEN to chat about how the arrangements are going and what has been happening. he gave me a few tips on what i could do and whom i could speak to with regards to marketing and getting the idea out there!
he mentioned that i should get in touch with HEART104.9FM to see if they would be interested in getting involved, as well as speaking to the Dean of Cape Town to see if he would like to attend the event as a guest of honour. after a very successful meeting i left enthused once again...and with about two pages of homework...lol

i thought id drop by Beaula Bar to say hi to Myrna, the Owner, as i hadn't seen her for ages, and low and behold...there was HEART104.9FM busy setting up for a ANTI-HOMOPHOBIC RALLY to be held in a few minutes. and who was there to attend the rally and give his support...you guessed it...THE DEAN OF CAPE TOWN!!! suffice to say i was a bit gobsmacked!
anyways, long story short, i found myself involved at the rally. meeting new people, telling them about the fundraiser, including speaking with Rev Smith AND BEING INTERVIEWED ON RADIO DURING THEIR DRIVE TIME SHOW (at 17:10pm to be exact-lol)!!!!

I left with a big smile on my face, amazed again at how things work out and how, if you just let the universe take its course, it WILL work together with you to accomplish your dreams and goals!!!

so yea, just a word of encouragement to any of you out there who feel that things don't always go your way...just hang in there! allow life to take its course and don't resist the 'blessings' which come your way..they ARE there, you just need to see them, take the opportunity and run with it!!

hey there guys and gals!

just thought id give a quick update about whats happening on this side!

its week three of my mission to get body and mind into good shape again after a lOOOng absence from the gym, and i have to say, its going AWESOME!!!
i forgot how good it feels to be able to wake up early(and lately without an alarm might i add) and go to gym, knowing that im healthy, body, mind and soul!
its amazing how your perspective changes. the environment around you feels better, you feel 'lighter' and all of a sudden you have a new zest for life and all you want to do is just go out there and enjoy it!

as for the body....yep...its getting there! lol! i have told myself i want to resemble some sort of 'underwear model' by the time the competition comes around and so, in true sagitarian nature, im giving it my all! (you know how we saggies like to to things to the extreme!)

dont get me wrong...i miss a nice little bash, but for now, its focus focus focus!!! im sure there will be enough time to celebrate and have a ball!!! (and dont we know how to do just that girls!-lol)

as far as that fundraiser is concerned, things are looking good. Health4Men (the organization that the funds will be going to) are excited to be onboard! there are also two possible venues for the event, some DJ's that seem keen on giving of their time and now it is just to think of a theme for the night! so if any of you have suggestions, feel free to share!!!

anyway, watch this space, as ill be posting some new pics soon (just to show you boys that i REALLY am working hard) and ill also be giving you an update on how the planning for the fundraiser is going!!!

OMAR vs SATCHWELL: what's your ruling?

some serious comments were made by Attorney Zahir Omar about Anti-apartheid activist and Judge Kathy Satchwell concerning her actions in court, her sexual orientation and her ability to relate to what he called 'God-fearing South Aricans'.

Here are some of his comments:
on behalf of his Society for the Protection of our Constitution he told the Judicial Service Commision: "learned Judge Satchwell's unconventional lifestyle is not something that the majority of South Africans can relate to. The majority of South Africans are God-fearing and follow some or other religion. there is no religion that condones homosexuality. therefore the majority portion of the South African people will not be able to identify with the learned judge".

he also commented that 'this learned judge does not have the maturity and discipline required to fulfil the office of a Constitutional Court'.

Mr Omar seems to forget that this Judge fought for the very Constitution that his 'society' protects. if it wasnt for activists like her, there would be no constitution to protect today.
if it wasnt for activists like her, we would not have the freedom of speech that he so 'freely' uses today and our constitution would not be based on democracy and equality for ALL.

what about the God -fearing people out there who are homosexual? does this mean we dont count? do we not also form part of South Africa? are we no longer good enough to serve in a democratic society? surely WE can relate to her.
and what about those South Africans who do NOT follow a religion of some sort? do we not count anymore?

as Human Rights Commision head Jody Kollapen said, 'these types of complaints undermine the very spirit of our constitution'.

A CONSTITUTION WHICH SERVES TO PROTECT EVEN THOSE IN MINORITY GROUPS!

my 'ruling is this: Omar, until you sit in the judges seat, keep your opinions, judgements and complaints to yourself! and dont forget those who fought before you for the foundation that you stand on today!

SEMENYA'S RACE FOR IDENTITY

Ok so i figured i have quite and interesting issue to chat about today!
and its concerning Caster Semenya and the issue about her sexuality. after reading in today's newspaper about the extensive tests they wanna do to 'determine' her sexuality i was a bit shocked! apparently an examination could involve a gynaecologist, and a psycologist. not to mention possible genetic testing!
the same happened to Indian sprinter Santhi Soundarajan in 2006. after she was scrutinized by other teams she too underwent 'gender verification tests'. it was found that 'she does not possess the sexual characteristics of a woman', and she was stripped from her medal!

so what do you guys think about this?
how must she feel? im sure she knows her sexuality! is is it fair then to atrip her of her medal based on phsycoligical tests or genetic testing?
i want to hear hear your input!!!

Hey there girls and boys!! ...

Welcome to my blog page. I’m Charl van den Berg, 27 and from Sea Point, Cape Town. I’m starting up this blog for some self promotion as a finalist in for the Mr. Gay South Africa competition.

Yeah, yeah I know what you’re thinking these beauty competitions are so narcissistic and just brainless wonder parading around in skimpy underwear working hard for that sash and sceptre. LOL! Believe me I’m not here for the glory of being South Africa’s Number 1 Moffie. I actually have a message and a sense of social responsibility that I’d like to share and winning this title will provide me with a great opportunity to contribute positively towards the South African gay community and hopefully to South Africa in general.

Although I’m painfully aware that as South Africa we have a Constitution that is based on sexual equality, I think our biggest obstacle to this equality is not what we perceive to be so called heterosexual prejudice. Our biggest obstacle to true equality is our own internal prejudice within the gay community.

I work as a manager at a gay friendly chain of restaurants. So you get to meet a wide range of people from varying creeds, orientations and races and you are certainly afforded an opportunity to realise just how diverse not only our country is, but also more specifically, how diverse the 'greater gay community' is. So I’m very often engaged in conversations from the frivolous ‘about what she is wearing’ or ‘the latest hunk d’jour’ and some serious concerns from Julius Malema and Manto, to homophobia and HIV Aids. But the topic that always gets my attention is our own internal prejudices amongst ourselves.

It baffles me that even in a minority group such as the gay community; there can still be division and prejudice. Yes, I said it: although it’s never spoken about in polite conversation we are still divided amongst lines of class, top or bottom, butch or meisle-like and especially colour. How can we ever make a stand in the world if we can’t even stand together?

So this is why I’ve started this blog. To get the gay community speaking openly about these issues and confronting, as painful as it may be, their own prejudices. So I hereby invite you to share your own experiences comments or thoughts and be actively involved and not just take a back seat to issues and challenge our own prejudices that many of us seem to do.

Apart from keeping you all updated on how the run up to the finals for Mr. Gay South Africa is going I would like for you to share some of your own experiences from day to day. It would be great to see what you guys and girls get up to, the issues that concern YOU in your own life and just day to day human experience.
